Excel TOTAL Engineering 3 Years ago Karma: 0
Hi you all over there,

For the last three years I have developed Excel macro code to get a hand with my day to day working.

Right now it's something around 150.000 lines. My intention is to get everything I deal with solved through Excel, that means no other software, not even CAD one. No DLLs or OCX involved, just pure VBA. Sometimes I borrow others creative ideas as Doug Jenkins's (newtonexcelbach.wordpress.com/) or Christos Samaras's (www.myengineeringworld.net/) ones, when I see there is innovative aproximations to the problems I face or when I see genius-like typing code. But most of the code is mine. Been the last three months translating everything to english... cumbersome given the quantity of code. When I do a search and replace and x.xxx strings replaced, get in panic mode on... this occurs very often, fortunatelly still working ok.

I started with road design, which I had almost finished. Not like AutoCAD Civil, but nearly there... pretty close, given the graphical limitations of Excel.

I can read DXF files, KML files (google Earth), do coordinates conversion to whaterever DATUM, get back to UTM or whatever I need. Of course KML and DXF are written back to disk. Can be drawed in the Sheet, with thickness, color,... bla, bla, bla. Pitty is that Excel behaves strange with zoom level and is not very "precise".

Then I jumped to EPANET (not very succesfully, as I only get to deal with the INP files), and finally to HEC-RAS last month. Didn't touch their DLLs even If I should, because I had little information about their "functions", and always try to replace software, given that if I can get same results is obvious I'm a master in the materia. For me is just the way to get the knowledge in my head (as I didn't got them during the studies years ) ).

Started a FEM program, but get stuck with the array operations needed for optimization. But I'm disposed to finish a 3D FEM, purely on VBA, not like Turan, starting with data from DXF files... don't know where I will get or how many months I will need to achieve... I get it done in a small scale for the HP-48 when I was at university, is only a question to get it with bigger arrays.

Need to know if someone out there is trying the same or I'm the only stupid one that is gonna try. "Difficult things get done, Impossibles, get tried"

I am not aware of anyone working on similar projects. Turan's 3D FEM did have some matrix limitations but newer versions of Excel can handle much larger matrix inversions. I have not seen a pure VBA solution to the problem.

One of the best things about running the site is to see just how inventive people can be using Excel. All our users are very helpful when it comes to testing and passing back feedback. Hopefully publishing on the site will bring you a wide audience. Please count on our full support and please ask if you would like any specific support.

You might like to look at our new website ExcelWraps which allows Excel users to create apps for corporate cloud solutions for data, digital signatures & media. Maybe you can think of a good application?
