Thermal Expansion Issue 6 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 1
A consultant has designed a pedestrian overpass for our company. It spans 60-ft and the main girders bolt directly into the webs of the columns on each side of the track. There is no accomodation for expansion. The consultant says the STAAD model shows that thermal loads don't govern. While this may be true, shouldn't the axial load caused by thermal expansion be roughly equal to that of a hand calc? I understand the way the load is distributed will be different, but i think the axial load cause by the girder expanding would be about the same. The coonsultant says the program sees the main girder as 6 separate elements - some get added and some get subtracted so that its hard to determine the total axial force. If anyone has dealt with this and has some expertise, please let me know what you think

eng619,
Yes the hand calcs and the model should match up. If your consultant can't explain it by hand then he/she should be shot in my opinion. This spreadsheet should be easily adapted to solve your problem. /repository/heat/thermal-effects-for-buildings/

probably no the best forum for this type of question, you may wish to join engtips other structural issues as that forum is all about these types of problems.
