ExcelCalcs Mission Statement

ExcelCalcs will build the web's largest repository of solved problems using the world's most popular mathematical software tool (Excel) and make it available to the world for free.

Privacy Policy
Any information you supply to ExcelCalcs is treated as confidential. It is not divulged to other users or third parties.

Older Versions of Excel
XLC will not work with versions of MS Excel prior to Excel 2000.

Repository Downloads have #NAME errors
A #NAME error apears in cells when Excel does not recognise a function used in a cell formula. Most of the files in the repository use the XLC addin so that cell formulae can be displayed as mathematical equations. The XLC addin uses special non-standard Excel functions, so if it is not installed then #NAME errors will occur. It is simply rectified by installing the XLC addin. It is also possible that documents require other Excel Addins but the addins are usually listed somewhere in the document.

So why the frogs?
Well the big fat frog is called Excel and the cute little fellow riding on its back is called XLC.

Are my calculations good enough for the Repository?
Our general attitude is that something is always better than nothing so please do not hesitate to upload calculations. Other users may choose to improve and upload an improved calculation. Any calculation on any topic is welcome.

Text book referencing
ExcelCalcs encourages posting of text book sample problems in its Repository. Copyright prevents us from any physical copying of text books but the calculation method can be encoded into Excel worksheets without infringing copyright. We actively encourage users to purchase reference books by providing links using XLC's "Amazon Search" button.

Virus Threats

For reasons best known to themselves some people take delight in developing and spreading viruses. It is possible to embedded a virus within excel files. We cannot guarantee that files are virus free but the site is regularly scanned and we make particular efforts to ensure that new uploads are virus checked. Only registered users can upload to the site and it is unlikely that they would willingly upload an infected file. We also rely upon our users to post comments regarding any suspicious files. If you are particularly worried about viruses then always save downloads to disk and anti-virus scan with your preferred software before opening. Files with many downloads and good rating and reviews are very unlikely to be harmful.

Why does XLC have an expiry date?

XLC is regularly improved and we want all our users to benefit from them, so old versions die and new versions can be downloaded. It simplifies support issues and it also offers some protection from piracy. Please note that when XLC expires only the ability of XLC to redraw equations will cease to work. Those equations already drawn remain as graphic objects and all Excel functions (including XLC functions) continue to work. There is no danger of not being able to use your excel file or loosing time you have invested in developing a spreadsheet.

How does ExcelCalcs generate income?

Image ExcelCalcs aspires to make all its resources available to the world for free however it is a commercial enterprise. We are grateful to our members who use XLC's 'Amazon Search Button' to purchase books and any other products from Amazon (Amazon pay a small referral fee to ExcelCalcs). Other Amazon links on the site work in the same way.

We also look for site sponsors - to show our appreciation we allow sponsors to display banners. These banners will be viewed by a highly intelligent and learned community (that’s you in case you don’t recognise yourself!). We believe commercial success lies increasing the size of our community rapidly and we rely on our users to invite their friends and colleagues to join.

So why did you write XLC ?
If the bed rock of the engineer’s computer is Windows then its foundation is the MS Office suite and over these omnipresent applications engineers lay their software tools. Today’s engineers do not reach for the ‘back of a fag packet’ when they flesh out a calculation they reach for Excel – because it is always there, everyone can use it, everyone can read it and let’s face it is very good at what it does.

Excel parameterises 3D models, sorts databases and post processes finite element results but excel is at its most powerful when we use it to ‘calculate stuff’. With so many software utilities out there you could just slob out and let the ‘black box’ solvers take over. However if you want to keep those engineering muscles in tone you’re better off thinking through a problem using your trusted engineering theory books and encoding a spreadsheet. When working with spreadsheets you are forced to understand the mechanics of the problem thereby putting yourself in the best position to devise innovative solutions. The process reinforces your knowledge and empowers you to break new technical ground with confidence. So don’t get sloppy and be seduced by ‘black boxes’ - broaden your engineering vocabulary by doing more calculations. Once a problem is encoded in a spreadsheet there are many Excel features that give you an enormous return on your time invested.

Excel and I have not always been so loved up – she seems to enjoy flirting with accountants, ignoring me as an engineer. I don’t think she really understands my need to produce a set of engineering calculations. Excel teases me by showing the answers but jealously guarding the underlying equations (well you can ‘show formulas’ but =AA415^2/(BT$6+S$3)^3 is hardly transparent). Microsoft tried to keep me sweet with the MS Equation Editor – but I’ve been fobbed off, it’s a dumb editor with no interaction with the cell formulae. Excel and I locked ourselves away in a last ditch effort to resolve our issues. We worked hard, there were some tears but we came though with a new addition - my own little addin XLC - it dynamically displays cell formula as equations – now it's easy to see when my cell formulas are wrong and Excel and I have re-kindled our love and I have fallen for her all over again.
