Description

A very simple set of calculations to establish the maximum stress and deflection in flat plates under a variety of support and loading conditions. The calculations allow very convenient initial estimates of plates strengths to be carried out. (14 plate arrangements are included)

Purpose of Calculation
Calculation of maximum stress and deflection in thin plates under a variety of support and loading conditions

Calculation Validation
The various calculations have been checked against other methods of calculating the  values (see my webpage)

Introduction

This page includes simple formula for the calculation of the maximum stress and deflection for thin flat plates under a variety of support and loading conditons.
The equations are only valid if the deflection is small compared to the plate thickness.equations are also only reasonably accurate if the thickness is less than 10% of the diameter.
The loading scenario for the simply supported rectangular plates assume that the upper edges of the loaded surface are restrained from lifting such that all of the edges are in contact during the the loading condition.

BHT thank you for reporting in this error. Sadly Roy Beardmore, the file author has died. I have examined the equations for case 7 and I believe that you are indeed correct. In fact case 8 has made the same mistake. I have corrected them both and uploaded a new calculation version 2.1. I notice that when Roy has used the lower case

Hello,Just a query regarding equation 7 on this spreadsheet. Should central Load P be input in N not N/mm2 as shown?

The spreadsheet uses the XLC add-in so You will need to install this first [see FAQ's].

Using Plates spreadsheet and as soon as I input any figures the stress results change to #Name?
