ShowWorking=1 doesn't work if you use cell names 1 Year, 3 Months ago Karma: 5
John,

Am I doing something wrong here?
I tried the software.
It works fine.
However, whenever I use cell names and use these cell names in formulae, the equations show these cell names only, even if I have set "ShowWorking = 1".

Is this normal?

To get the actual values displayed in the graphic, I find I have to use cell addresses in the formula AND set "ShowWorking =1".
Using Cell address in the formulae neutralizes the advantages and elegance of naming cells meaningfully.

I feel with ShowWorking set to 1, one should be able to get the graphic to display the actual values irrespective of whether cell addresses or cell names are used in the formulae.

Hi Vish

I guess you are naming cells and then using them in your formulas. I.E using =a*b rather than =B2*B3.

I have found the same thing i.e. if you want to show the values in your equation, you need to use the cell references rather than the names.

Cells named in the traditional way can be included in the algebraic form of the equation (which is a plus really). For the meaning to be transparent to the reader, the value of the named cells should probably be visibly defined somewhere in the calc anyway, so the reader can always refer back to that.

I guess the advantage of naming the cells yourself is that you can enter the equation parameters by name rather than by cell reference. Personally I always used the cell reference method anyway but select the cells using the mouse or keyboard rather than typing the cell names by hand.

I tend not to name cells so I had not thought through this issue. I'll put it down on my 'todo' list and try to improve XLC in this regard.

Hi John:

I have upgraded to EXCEL 2000 and downloaded XLC. The equations along with the use of Greek Letter delineation is beautiful. Congratulations on a Great Job!

In reference to what Vish has stated ...

1) Changing any of the defaults in the EQS function does not work for me.

2) Changing the defaults in About XLC and setting doesn't do any thing for me either. All the built-in defaults apply regardless what parameter of EQS function is changed.

3) I can move the graphic of an equation while the EQS stays put in its original position. I can not however rotate the graphic -- this may be an EXCEL Version thing (I just upgraded to EXCEL 2000 from EXCEL 97 as I stated in my opening statement)

I started working with XLC earlier today, so I will probably have a lot more questions for you. So far Looking Good John!

I am on to exploring the repository now.

Yogi I have attached a simple spreadsheet displaying a formula using 3 EQS() statements with different parameters. Open it up and take a look at the three EQS statements to see how the presentation of equations can be altered by changing EQS parameters.
Then hit the "Redraw all worksheet equation" button on the XLC toolbar. It should redraw all equations exactly as they were. If it does not then send me your spreadsheet and I'll try to figure out what the problem is.
Thanks for the kind comments.
Cheers
John

Hi John

I'm using Excel 2000 with Vista. I have tried out your spreadsheet and everything is working as it should.

However, I am unable to rotate equations. I think this is something to do with MS Office rather than XLC. My experience is that picture objects can't be rotated in word or excel (only those created with the drawing primitives built in to Office).
