This area of the Forum is Reserved for comments and discussion of specific Calculation Repository items. There is one topic for every document in the Repository. Generally authors like to receive feedback, to let them know that you value their contribution or to help them make improvements to their calculations. You might also like to make other users aware of other resources and references relating to this topic. I would encourage all users to leave some feedback when ever possible.

BMREINF9.xls updated to Ver. 1.8 2 Months ago Karma: 18
In the "BMREINF9.xls" workbook, in the "Member + WT" worksheet a "quirk" was discovered for situations where the neutral axis of the composite section falls below the bottom of the existing member. These are not situations which would often occur, but in theory they can and when they do, the composite section modulus referenced to the bottom of the lower flange of the existing member would come out to be a negative number as it was programmed. Corrections were made by merely inserting the absolute value command (ABS) where required. Again, these situations are not practical as they entail adding reinforcement which is basically more hefty that the original member. For these situations if the normally high residual stress is included, as it should be unless the original beam can be virtually unloaded, the heavy reinforcing section does not buy you much at all. Nevertheless, since this worksheet could be also be used with the assumption of unloading the original beam, I have made the corrections as noted above. The same corrections were also made in the "Member + Plate" and "Member + I-Beam" worksheets. This workbook is now version 1.8.
