We frequently use a greek leter follow by a Letter and a subscript letter, i.e. fPn, where f is the greek letter phi, P is the Letter and n is the subscript. Current if I type in |fPn and push the XLC name equation button, I would get the phi in greek followed by two subscripts. Other then naming the cell manually, is there a work around to make the subscipt of the last letter only?

Yes
1) name using XLC as you have already done.
2) delete the space before the "=" character to stop XLC automatically subscripting on a redraw.
3) Edit the cell and select the "P" character only goto Excel's main menu and select Format>Cells>Font and uncheck the subscript box. Press Ok and you are done.
