Calculation Preview

In most problems of stress analysis, the stress field is found within a solid body without regard for local effects caused by the application of the load; however, whentwo solid bodies with curved surfaces are forced together, consideration must be given to the special stress field created near the contact area. Gears and rollingelementbearings are two notable examples of machine parts in which contact stresses are of great importance in determining the operating life.
Contact problems are classified as counterformal if the dimensions of the area of contact are small compared to the radii of curvature of the contacting surfaces near the region of contact. If the dimensions of the contact area are not small with respect to the radii of curvature of the contacting surfaces, the problem is classified as conformal. A counterformal problem is called Hertzian if the contacting surfaces can be approximated by quadratic functions in the region of contact. If the quadraticapproximation is invalid, the problem is non-Hertzian. All conformal problems are non-Hertzian.

I use the calc of a cylindrical pin in a cylindrical hole a lot (have my own excel sheet for that) and checked it against Rahul's with same results
I do use different v1 and v2 as well as E1 and E2 when I check steel pin in bronze bushing

John,
For linear contact divide your allowable by 4 and for point contact by 5.5 Allowable could be yield/3 or ultimate/5
There are other codes too but the above one is conservative.

Very good calculation again Rahul. I wonder if you have any advice regarding the allowable stress for Hertzian contact stresses?
