Description

This file can be downloaded by subscribers to our free trial account!

Description - XLC software enhances MS Excel so that cell formulae can be displayed as mathematical equations and your worksheets read like textbooks.

To install XLC download and run XLC_Ribbon_setup.exe. XLC works with Windows versions of Excel - 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and Excel365 (both 32 bit and 64 bit versions are supported). It does not work on any Mac, web or reduced versions of Excel. Any installation problems please browse to the installation directory (usually ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\XLC’) and open XLC.xlam directly. Also check that the XLC Add-In is activated Excel> File> Options> Add-Ins> Manage Excel Add-ins Go button. XLC.xlam must be in 'Trusted Locations' Excel>Options>Trust Center then 'Trust Center Settings ...' and select 'Trusted Locations'.

Users with older versions of Excel can install XLC Toolbar (Excel 2000 & 2003).

XLC Pro Mode & XLC Ed - If you use XLC for commercial purposes you need to pay for a paid XLC subscription. One subscription is required for each XLC user. Choose an XLC paid plan and no restrictions apply to XLC or the ExcelCalcs site whilst your subscription is active. You will be prompted to renew your subscription just before it expires. If you allow your paid XLC subscription to expire XLC continues to work but it reverts to a restricted trial mode (see below). How to configure XLC in the XLC Pro mode.

XLC Trial Mode - The following restrictions apply.

  • XLC is strictly for non-commercial use.
  • XLC renders some equations with a watermark stating 'Non-commercial use.'
  • XLC renders equations with a hyperlink to the ExcelCalcs site.
  • XLC disables the following button “Delete XLC Functions”.
  • No Repository downloads.
We are very grateful to users who support us by choosing our XLC paid subscription plan. Your fees pay for software development, new repository calculations and site enhancement.

I apologize for not answering sooner, I have been busy. What more information could I provide?I have Windows 10 Pro Version 1607 Build 14393.479 64 bit I have Microsoft Office 365 64bit - About Excel says 2016 MSO (16.0.7426.1015) 64 -bitI have only one active add-in: XLCP.S. JohnDoyle[Admin] 7 years ago
Priit finally configured a machine but I am afraid when I hit the redraw button all the equations they were rendered correctly. Please see screenshot below. There must be something peculiar about your installation of Excel that is giving rise to this odd behaviour but I am puzzled to think what it might be.

Sorry Priit for not getting back sooner. I have had some trouble setting up a machine to test this. Give me a little while longer and I'll get back to you later today.

Right click on the tab then selecting insert raises Excel's native Insert Form from where I can select worksheet and a new worksheet is inserted. This is Excel functionality and is the same when I do it on a machine with XLC installed and without XLC installed. So I still suspect that your problem is unrelated to XLC.
BMT Structural 7 years ago
You have to hold the pointer over the tab at the bottom of the workbook to do this - I'm still using Excel 2010 so it may be something they have changed.

BMT Structural 7 years ago
If I right click on one of my new ExcelCalcs tabs as per the image, then select insert I am able to select another template from Excel but when I insert it nothing happens (but I can hear the HDD trying to do something). There is no error message, it just doesn't happen. After some experimenting I have discovered that it is not all ExcelCalcs files that do this so I think you are right that it is something external, possibly to do with different versions of Excel (some templates are 97-2003, some are later).
JohnDoyle[Admin] 7 years ago
There is absolutely no loss of functionality, including the ability to insert new worksheets (tabs) when XLC is installed. I would be happy to take a look at the problem if you wish to attach an example. I suspect it is some other issue.
BMT Structural 7 years ago
With ExcelCalcs running I am unable to insert new sheets (tabs) into an existing workbook. If I delete the ExcelCalcs items in the spreadsheet it then allows me to insert another tab. Is this a known feature? In the past I have typically compiled calculations into a single .xls file (up to 50 separate sheets) for easy printing.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 7 years ago
Excel 2013 introduced a native function called FORMULATEXT() which displays the cell formula of reference cell. Perhaps this will give you the functionality you are looking for?The purpose of our XLC software is to make auditable engineering calculations using Excel displaying cell formulas as mathematical equations. If you follow the work around I suggest then a hard print of the document will produce auditable engineering calculations suitable for third party scrutiny.
priit 7 years ago
Then it is not better than just writing the equation myself. I hoped that I was missing something.Engineering calculations have a lot of situations when you have to take the minimum value from set of calculated values....
JohnDoyle[Admin] 7 years ago
Sorry for a bit slow on the uptake Priit. I understand your problem now. Unfortunately XLC only allows you to name single cells so the use of a multiple cell range like B2:B5 will not be rendered. The range B2:B5 covers cells with XLC names of b, c, d and e.As a work around you create two cells one containing the formula =MIN(B2:B5) and name this cell 'Min_b_e' and another cell containing the formula =MAX(B2:B5) and name this cell 'Max_b_e'. If you use these in subsequent formulas the the names 'Min_b_e' and 'Max_b_e' will be displayed in xlc equations.I hope this makes sense to you.

I just installed the software and have the same issue. I tried your idea of turning off XLC calcs through the options/add-in. When it is turned off I do not get any error messages. Apart from the 'Settings'button does XLC function correctly?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
It may be an issue with the Korean version of Excel 2007 - it is very hard for me to tell as I don't have a copy. It works on US and UK versions of Excel 2007 but I have not checked this in a while as I no longer run Excel 2007. I will install it and check it out. If there are any problems I will get back to you.

Hey John. FYI I installed XLC on 2016 as well. I am using Windows 10 Pro. x64 and Office Pro. My ribbon would not load automatically. I went to the add-in opt-in box (under options, add-ins, Manage, etc.). I have several other add ins listed already, but XLC was not listed, so it could not be selected. As such the ribbon wasn?t loaded. After reinstalling a few times for good measure, from the opt-in box, I clicked on ?Browse? and browsed to the XLC.xlam file in the Program files (x86) off *root* drive (
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
I am also running Excel 2013. ATVBAEN.xlam is one of the Excel analysis tool packs. It should not throw an error but it could be errors in other add-ins that stops XLC loading. It may be worth deactivation all other add-ins to see if XLC appears on the ribbon.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
The actually installation directory will make no difference so it is fine running from File programs(x86) even though you are running in 64 bits.It seems that XLC is installed correctly but does not load when Excel starts up. A good work around is to start Excel and simply open XLC.xlam. Alternatively look to Excel's add-in management tools that are found Excel>File>Options>Add-Ins then find Manage Excel Add-ins and hit the Go button. If XLC is not shown in the Add-Ins available list then use the browse button to load it.I trust this is helpful.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
It may be that there is some corruption of the installation file. I'd download it again and check that the file is 532.21 Kb in size. Then reinstall it.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\XLC can you browse to that directory and open the file XLC.xlam. Please report back any error messages you encounter. This may help me work out what's going on.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
Installed XLC on Excel 2016 without a hitch. It is fully functional and working I am pleased to report. Remember to check that Excel>File>Options>Add-ins then look for 'Manage' and hit the GO button. XLC should be listed just make sure it is checked too.

I am using Excel 2016. I have downloaded the ribbon and installed. The XLC tab is not showing up when I open Excel. Is this not yet compatible with Excel 2016?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
XLC for the Mac hit the rocks. There seems to be no way of customising the toolbar. It is possible to extend the menu system but this is considered inferior to the XLC toolbar/ribbon you can customise in the windows version of Excel.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
Some issues were corrected regarding AutoXLC functionality. If you use this feature of the program then I suggest you update your copy of XLC.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 8 years ago
The work around is just to use equations with two lines one above the division line and one below the division line. In the example below you could write the term for a6 over three lines and just use 'a' terms (and one division line above another). However using XLC I need to stick to two line and introduce a new variable 'b'. I hope this helps.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 9 years ago
As a work around you can also disable the XLC addin using Excel> Options> Addins and run the addins manager. Un-checking XLC will disable the workbook open code.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 9 years ago
I can't reproduce the problem here but I can introduce some error trapping that would make the code more robust. Would you like to send me your spreadsheet and I'll see if I can reproduce your error and see if the error trapping solves the problem?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 9 years ago
Hi Priit well the short answer to your question is yes XLC runs some code every time you open a work book. It does this to make sure that XLC functions are correctly referenced (currently the functions live in the addin but older workbooks reference an external function library which is now only used in the toolbar version of the program). When the code is executed the first thing it does is save the workbook calculation setting. Then it sets it to manual and runs some code (as it runs quicker in the manual calculation mode). Once the code is run it sets it back to the saved setting. I am going to run a few checks on this Priit to double check that everything is working as we intend it to.
priit 9 years ago
Every time I start Excel the Workbook Calculation is set to "manual".
I tried saving the workbook when set to Automatic, as Excel should remember the last state.
Nothing helped until I disabled XLC addin. After that Excel started behaving normally.
Toggling XLC addins "Auto XLC" does not have any effect.
Any suggestions?
Does XLC addin run any macro on startup?
Does XLC addin change excel template workbook?

Hi John,The majority of structural calculations I undertake are for ultimate limit state. Design actions are generally denoted by using the superscript '*'. Unfortunately, XLC treats the '*' symbol in variables names as a multiplication operation and renders accordingly. Is it possible to extend the rendering capabilities of XLC so that it detects if a '*' symbol is used in a variable name (and if it is super scripted) and render them correctly? I currently use the superscript '#' as a work-around however having support for the '*' symbol in variable names would make presentation of the calculations even nicer.I thought I should post this on the forum to see if the above would benefit/effect any other users.Keep up the great work.Regards Jake

XLC is updated to automatically detect XLC functions from any file and correct it to use the latest function library. This all occurs in the background and ensures that any file downloaded from the repository can be loaded with correction to the XLC functions. It also includes a bug fix for cell copy functionality reported in this thread.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 10 years ago
No Mike there is not currently a way to do this. An equation editor, like the one that ships with Word, would be the easiest way to achieve what you are looking for. The main purpose for XLC is to render an equation from the cell formula as a way of checking it against a formula you are copying from a text book and also that the calculation method is transparent and easily read. All Excel cell formulas start with an

Roger and I spent some time looking at this problem over the phone and I managed to take a look at his PC using TeamViewer. It seems that Excel can be installed without VBA (this is the first I have heard of this but is documented on the Microsoft site). Obviously without VBA XLC will not run nor will any Excel add-in including the ones supplied by microsoft (Solver.xlam). Roger is re-installing Excel and hopefully this will remedy the problem.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 10 years ago
Hi Roger sorry you are having some difficulty installing the software. Firstly did you install the the ribbon version of XLC and not the toolbar version (this is only intended for Excel 2003). If for some reason you did download and it did not install correctly may I suggest you find the installation directory (usually C:\program files\XLC) and search for a file called XLC.xlam. Just open this file in excel and you should be good to go.Let me know how you get on.

Hello,Not an XLC question per se, but this seems like a good place to ask.I am using Excel 2010 after having quite a long break from doing any real intensive calculations in excel. I could have sworn in previous versions when I clicked on a cell and copied it with Ctrl+C, I could press Ctrl+V more than once to copy the source cell to as may destination cells as I wanted without the source cell deactivating. Is this correct or has Excel always only ever allowed one Ctrl+V for each Ctrl+C command? Seems a bit painful. I know there is the clipboard but that not really as efficient as a quick keyboard operation. Many thanks,Jake

There are no extra strains posed on excel due to equations and the file should save and load without any difficulties. As far as Excel is concerned equations are simply graphics and all the code used to save a file is purely Excel. I have also taken a look at your excel file and I'm afraid it is very strange indeed. I don't think you fully understand what XLC is doing. Perhaps I could suggest that you follow the tutorials on the help page. This will show you how to use the software and how it can help you verify cell formulas in Excel.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 10 years ago
Yikes this looks terrible but there are some clues as to what is going wrong. XLC is telling us that a number of cells are not named. May I refer you to the help page and in particular the requirements for a named CellIf you wish please attach your file so that I can examine it in more detail.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 10 years ago
I have checked that the file downloads correctly and is not corrupt. The download file is an executable file, it sound like some security feature on your machine is preventing access. There is not much we can do at this end I'm afraid. [Admin]

I notice that your row height is quite large. Personally I always leave the row height to automatically fit and let equations spill over to the row below. I always leave the 'Equation vertical align' setting to 'top' which gives me an equation looking like this: BTW to select an image click on the 'Choose File' button then place the image in your post using the button to the right.
Jake.B 10 years ago
Thanks John. Changing that setting looks good. The exponent still renders high but everything else looks spot on. Its no big problem - Just thought I would bring it to your attention.Image attached (sorry still trying to work out how to include images in posts).Regards Jake
JohnDoyle[Admin] 10 years ago
JakeThere is an equation setting for this too. You can change the default setting using 'XLC Setting' button. Change the 'Equation vertical alignment' from 'top' to 'mid'
Jake.B 10 years ago
Hi John,Thank you very much for solving this one for me. I generally break up my equations into logical blocks to make it easier to see what is happening. It is a relatively easy fix to write it all as one line so will do this going forward. Sorry to cost you so much time tracing the cause of this one down.Regarding the vertical alignment of the + operator in the equations below, they seem to be a little high (top line by the looks of it). I assume this is just how excel renders equations? Thanks again John, greatly appreciated.Regards Jake

I have been searching for how the code could introduce these carriage return characters and not finding an answer. But I see that they have been introduced by you. Looking in the formula bar I can see you have carriage return characters: Simply remove these characters and all the rendering problems will disappear.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 10 years ago
I have had no problems in building the equation from scratch (see below): However when debugging you worksheet I have noticed that there are some strange carriage return characters that somehow seem to have crept in. I am at a loss to understand how this has happened and I am still investigating the problem further.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 10 years ago
Oh dear this has not worked out well at all. It has been a long time since we have had an equation rendering issue to investigate but this certainly seems a worthy case. Please give us a little time to investigate. Thank you very much for reporting this in. In the meantime as a work around may I suggest that you break your equation into parts.

Hello team,I have spent the day converting a calculation I had completed in MATHCAD over to Excel + XLC.Overall, I am very happy with the results. The equations are generally very presentable and the ability to show working is a big advantage over Mathcad IMHO.I do however have one problem as shown in row 128 of the attached calculation. I have a moderately complicated formula which requires me to take the square root. XLC seems to be having some trouble parsing the equation and formulating an appropriately rendered image of the equation.Would someone mind having a look and offering some advice? Many thanks,Jake Filename Bored_Pier_RevB.xlsm, size 206229

Hi all,I recently installed xlc onto my pc and since then have noticed that the add-on has changed the behavior of the clipboard within excel. When I copy a cell and paste it in another location, it is removed from the clipboard once it has been pasted the first time. Prior to installing xlc, excel worked as expected, such that I could copy a cell and paste it into several locations without having to re-copy each time. This same issue occurs when executing vba subs that I have written, where I used to copy a cell or range once and paste it in multiple locations, I now have to rewrite the line of code to copy the value each time I wish to paste it elsewhere. This issue has been reproduced by my colleagues also. We are all running Office 2010 32bit on Windows 7 64bit. Any help would be much appreciated.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 11 years ago
EdwardI am intrigued to hear your problem but I doubt very much if XLC is causing the problem. An XLC file is saved as any other Excel file. Equations are simply 'shapes' like any other Excel shape. XLC does have some custom functions and will require XLC to be installed to work but if it were not all you would see is some #NAME errors. I will quite happily answer any questions from your IT people if they wish but there are no patches to address such a problem. I hope my response is helpful.

As far as Excel is concerned an XLC named cell is just a cell containing some formatted text. This data is not lost when it is saved. As far as Excel is concerned XLC equations are simply graphics and again this data is not lost when it is saved.Unless I can reproduce the error you experienced I cannot debug it but I really cannot see how XLC has given rise to your file corruption issue.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 11 years ago
Thanks for your comments and I am sorry that the process of getting up and running is frustrating. All I can do to reassure you is that we are here to help and very happy to do so.In response to your specific difficulties:The toolbar version is a little more problematic to install that the ribbon version of the program. Generally the problem has to do with Windows installation rights but if you don't have installation rights you are pretty much stuck. The trial version of the program times out (this does nor happen to active subscribers). It is done so that trial users use the most up to date version and also to bring them back to the site periodically to encourage them to upgrade (although a trial subscription can be used indefinitely).Running videos from the Excelcalcs can be problem if your software is not the required version. However all the videos are available on our You tube channel. The YouTube player supports almost all browsers. Please stick with us we'll get you up and running.

Perhaps like many engineers, I find myself with many half baked spreadsheets after many years in practice, so see XLC as potentially a useful tool to clean things up from the past and present a more organised way forward. It's been difficult to move forward though; I don't know about others, but things haven't worked straight off the bat.I am busy, so go back to my work and sporadically return for another look. This time I download the XLC toolbar onto my laptop for another attempt, only to find that following a fresh download and successful install, the program says it is outdated (???).Looking in for a peak at the tutorials I find that the flash player stalls, because it doesn't have the latest version of adobe whatever... The laptop is a month old and i seem to remember being asked to update this program shortly after it's purchase...I am busy, tired and frustrated by my failure to launch XLC...Looks like a good idea, but....

Updated the code to get round the XLC Toolbar function and XLC Ribbon function compatibility issue. The problem was that any calculation created using the toolbar version of XLC which was subsequently loaded up by the ribbon version of XLC threw up some #NAME? errors. So sorry to have to put out this update so soon but I realised that the last version released 2 days ago 12.12.04 was not compatible with the 64bit version of Excel (thank you Clyde Hancock for reporting this in). Hi Ryan I have emailed to files to you to make sure you can get going but I am keen to try to find out exactly what the down load problems is. I assume that you have been trying to download the ribbon version of XLC? It seems that you have sucessfully downloaded other files from the site. If this is the case then perhaps the problem is related to you browser security settings. Most files on the site are Xls or xlsx files but the ribbon version of XLC is downloaded as XLC_Ribbon_Setup.exe. Browsers often raise warnings if you download executable files. Is this the problem?

briand 11 years ago
I realise this topic is a bit old, but I've just been trying to do the same thing and I also can't find a way to prevent characters in the middle of my name appearing as subscripts, even though I've ticked the box Show all multiplication signs in the settings. Whether or not I have a space between 'OAT' and '=', still end up with at least one subscript. For 'OAT=' (i.e. no space), the 'A' is a subscript; for 'OAT =' (i.e. one space) (or with just 'OAT' and nothing else) the 'AT' is a subscript. Is there a fix for this? If not, I won't be able to subscribe as I really need to have my names the way I want them.To complicate matters further, I often put underscores in my names, but these seem to result in subscripts; can this effect be changed? If not, I guess I may have to use a dashes instead of underscores, but that will be hard to remember as I've used underscores for breaking up variable names for as long as I've been using computers! Thanks for any help you can give.Brian

Introducing the first release of XLC Ribbon version for Excel 2007 and 2010 (both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Excel).
JohnDoyle[Admin] 11 years ago
Good news sadunham I am just completing work for the release of the ribbon version of XLC which will support the 64 bit version of Excel 2010 (and the 64 bit version of Excel 2013 which I am currently paying around with). I have already sent a Beta version to Clyde who reports that it is running without a hit on his copy of 64 bit Excel 2010. It will be posted up to the site sometime this weekend. I'll add a note in this thread when it will be available.

Hi ClydeI am working have a ribbon version of XLC that will run on 64 bit versions of Excel 2010. The ribbon version of XLC has been working on the 32 bit version of Excel 2010 for some time and is about ready for release but I have to confess that I do not actually have a 64 bit version Excel 2010 and I really need to get on and start testing the code with this. Would you be happy to run some Beta code and report any problems back to me?

I have just installed Microsoft Office 2010 (64 bit). I was not offered the option of installing the 32 bit version of Excel. I am saddened to discover that I cannot use ExcelCalcs. Are there plans for providing this in the future (I hope)? This will probably be an issue more and more in the future. I will really miss ExcelCalcs. Is there a way that I can install the 32 bit version of Excel? When I installed the 64 bit version of Office, the installation stated that I could not install the 64 bit version until I removed the 32 bit Office components that I had on my machine.:(

Thanks John for your two great answers. I was using WinZip to unzip the file and kept getting error messages. You suggested that I try another zip extraction tool to see if that would work. So I downloaded Express Zip and it worked like a charm. I was able to successfully unzip and install XLC. Again thanks for your response.

Hi John:I am having trouble unzipping file xlc 12_09_01Have tried downloading several times.Have tried unzipping to an uncompressed folder.Setup.exe is corrupted. My zip manager reports a format error when unzipping to the folder. The download size is 1060 kBCheersJohn
JohnDoyle[Admin] 11 years ago
Another thought... You are not working with the 64bit version of Excel 2010 are you. Our software does not currently support this version of Excel. It does work with the 32bit version of Excel 2010.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 11 years ago
Mmmm we have never had this one before. It seems to be some kind of problem with the integrity of the zip file. I downloaded from the site and checked myself and reinstalled myself. Everything worked for me so I don't think there is a problem with the integrity of the zip file on the site.It is sometimes worth extracting the files in the zip folder to a uncompressed directory and running setup.exe from there. Please let me know if this solves your problem.

I am afraid that XLC will not work with the 64 bit version of Excel 2010. I try to make this clear on the XLC download page but it is easy to miss. Unfortunately you'll find that many popular addins won't work on the 64 bit version of Excel 2010 and even Microsoft recommend the 32 bit version unless you need extra memory to access very large datasets (which appears to be the only benefit of the 64 bit version of Excel 2010 and is not generally a problem for engineers).
DRT 12 years ago
Hi JohnI have the same issuesI AM running 64 bit excel 2010.I am an admin super user but have also tried running as administrator on right click.I have disabled my AV.Yet I still get the same error message as above....

I'm afraid I am out of advice - I am sure the issue is related to problems with administrator access - you could try on an alternate machine?

To uninstall the Skype addin:Firefox: Tool>Add-ons then uninstall Skype addin.Internet Explorer: Click the gear symbol in the top right of the window> Manage Add-ons then uninstall Skype addin. From your description something appears to have upset XLC. If XLC continues having problems I suggest you do the following:

I hope this settles things down but by all means contact me again if you continue to have problems.

There is no problems installing the software on any 64 bit version of windows provided that you have a 32 bit version of Excel. There is currently only one 64 bit version of Excel 2010 but it is only used by users manageing very large datasets and even Microsoft recommend that you install the 32 bit version of Excel 2010.From what I have read 'Unable to register the DLL/OCX: Redsvr32 failed with the exit code 0x5.' arises because you need administrator rights to run the program. May I suggest you follow these instructions:
Download XLC.Extract the zip into a folder on your hard drive.Right click on the file
JohnDoyle[Admin] 12 years ago
Did your computer give any error messages? In the previous case the error code 0x80004005 pointed us towards administrator rights and User Account Control Settings.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 12 years ago
We had developed a ribbon version of XLC running under the 32 bit Excel 2010. We assumed that getting this running on 64 bit Excel 2010 would be straight forward. Unfortunately it was much more involved that we first imagined. Coupled with this we have only had 2 request from users who want to run on 64 bit Excel 2010 (yourself and Keith Sharp). Most users are following Microsofts advice and installing the 32 bit version of Excel.Microsoft recommendation:The only use advantage of the 64 bit version of Excel is to access more than 2GB of memory whih may be of interests to data analysts but not really a constraint for engineering calculations. Finally we decided to continue offering one version of XLC our software which works on all versions 32 bit Excel (2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010). We are now not intending to realease a version for 64 bit Excel. I apologise for raising any false expectations.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 12 years ago
Sorry for not responding Boss Ed I have only just noticed your post. You are goining about tackling the problem the right way but what exactly does the error code say?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 12 years ago
Maybe you have all tried this already but I lost my XLC toolbar for a little while in Excel 2010. I managed to find it again by checking Excel options. The strange thing was that the Add-Ins tab was checked (but not actually showing) so I unchecked it and then rechecked it and thankfully the XLC toolbar appeared. I believe it happened because I installed another addin and this had thrown a error message relating to a command bar. After that the Add-Ins tab disappeared completely and so the XLC toolbar could not be seen. I hope this helps.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 12 years ago
Well I am not sure what caused them to move but as far as Excel is concerned equations are simply graphics objects or inserted pictures. Certain Excel operations can move pictures, cut and paste operations in particular. Thankfully the EQS() function is the place-holder or anchor for equations so use the 'Redraw worksheet equations' buttons so that equations are returned to their right place.

JohnOne option that would be nice to have is to be able to format the formula on the left hand side as if you were writing it by hand.Normal preference would be to type b=2c=3A= b+c = 5However in XLC it only displays formulas on the right of a formula cell and you getA=5 b+cAlso would be nice to be able to tick a box so that you get an = sign before formula. Thought it happens some times but not all the time.Keep up the good workRegardsKeith Sharp

Working now but I had to delete the XLC key from the registry and reinstall. Two versions of XLC were shown in Programs and Features when I went to uninstall XLC 11_11. Think the older version was 09_04 but I didn't write down. Older version was definately uninstalled using Uninstall XLC from the start menu folder prior to installing 11_11 but I didn't check to see if it was also removed from Windows Programs and Features. Uninstalled both versions (09_04 didn't show an uninstall window), rebooted, updated excel and windows using windows update. Reinstalled 11_11 and my Username and Release Code were still shown in the Subcription Window. XLC still wasn't working with the same problem...Run Time error 13, freezing and couldn't close excel without forcing shutdown. Uninstalled XLC, rebooted, deleted registry key, reinstalled XLC, entered my username and release code (now reset) and now seems to be working.Fair bit of lost time but got there in the end.

Wow that seems to be working. That is great! I just disabled all the skype addons for all my browsers (IE, Firefox, and chrome). To answer you're question John, this isn't a new machine I've had it for over a year and this problem has been intermittent (not surprising if the root cause was the skype addon I guess...)Thanks everyone
JohnDoyle[Admin] 12 years ago
I noticed that recently XLC running in Excel 2010 was not showing equations. It was an intermittent fault and could always be rectified by rebooting my machine. But I set out to see what could be the route cause of the problem and I think it is the skype addin for Internet Explorer and Firefox. Forums are full of discussions where the Skype addin is causing problems with Excel and somewhere down the line it is upsetting XLC too. I advise everyone to disable the addin - as do Skype.See this thread "Skype causing MS Excel Error". Or this one "Fix Skype addin for Cannot Empty the Clipboard in Office". its also here.
I have not got to the bottom of this yet but I have disabled the skype addin and all seems to be working fine again.

I'm probably not quite following what you are trying to achieve but using current XLC functionality to display formulas within tables you could present your calculation in one of two ways (as shown below). However XLC always follows the convention of the column name followed by the tagged row name. I could change this convention if it would be useful to do so.

Hi Gordon, thanks for your question. I too have worried about the best way to display if statements. My advice is to keep your IF() functions as simple as possible so that they are more readily understood. If you look in text books words are often added to explain the logic this is easily done in Excel too. As an example I am just working on a calculation for plastic stress distribution in a rectangular beam.

I think the problem may be with your windows user profile not a roaming profile this will be more familiar to your administrator. See below taken from later in the the thread I referred you to.Without access to your system it is hard for me to understand exactly what the problem is but from experience it is generally:1) problems with not having administrator rights to install software.2) Occasionally problems with the Windows User Profile which have been resolved remotely by system administrator and I don't have a full understanding of the problem. I am going to raise this with a colleague, a very talented software engineer, to see if he can throw any light on the situation. Please bear with me.

To double check the formula, I select the image of the formula and then click the add-in to change to the numeric display. Most times this works. Sometimes, the numeric version is superimposed over the formula with the enite cell outlined with a black border. Since there is no undo (apparently) for the add-in functions, I select and delete to clear the cell and then use the

Thanks for reporting this in. This has been a problem in the past because ms media player does not seem to be well supported by all browsers. I always check the site using Internet Explorer and Firefox which seems to cover most people out there.I like windows media player file for screen capture because they are pretty compact and render the screen better than YouTube media. They play very well when maximised on a full screen too.It may be an error I made on the XLC help page so could you tell me if you can you play the following videos played in the ExcelCalcsTV viewer e.g. /ExcelCalcsTV/videodirectlink/25-xlc-quick-start-01/Thanks again for your help.

Hi Craig sorry to hear you are having problems with the installation. Let me reassure you that we offer a full refund if you are not entirely satisfied. This has never happened so far and I expect we can overcome any problems. Please ask your IT to contact me (see 'Contact Us' on the right hand side of the website). I'll can guide him through a few checks. If you view the forum you'll see quite a few people have had installation problems this is generally to do with unsuccessful download, admin privileges or user access account problems.Running the setup.exe file is generally all you have to do but if this fails I can run through a manual installation process where we can check progress stage by stage. Its is important that I get some feedback on each stage and find out any error messages that may be thrown up:There are two files Excel needs to have access to for XLC to run successfully A ) XLC.dll (this is the toolbar component). B ) XLC.xll (this contains special XLC functions). I watched the IT admin run the install programs and I assume they ran ok - do they give any message of a sucessfull install? If not they should. Open Excel and no XLC toolbars nor is it listed in view list of toolbars. Did brouse to addin and installed it. It does show up on the addin list but no toolbars or program functionality (=OVD(1)/UND(2) only results in text). I expect the XLC.dll file is not loaded. I can get IT back but I have to be carefull, if they smell a rat (unauthorised software) they'll fold. Ouch! the 90USD came out of my pocket, not expenses. What next? Is there a way to format the equations so that they appear in the same text as the other data in the spreadsheet? I started working on a spreadsheet over a year ago, and I seemed to have gotten the equations to look similar, but now I get a completely different font and spacing. I would also like to change the multiplication character to something larger, but still a dot centered in the font height. The options has a place to change the multiplication symbol, but how do I get somethinmg other than a keyboard character?I also run into a problem occasionally where after bringing in an equation, when I try to click on a single cell several vertical stacked cells will highlight. Thank you for your kind comments eng619 your query has been asked a number of times so I thought it was about time I uploaded a video to cover good techniques when working with tabular data in Excel. The video is in two parts. Part 1 is here and part 2 is here. Here at ExcelCalcs we endeavour to serve a community brought together through a common interest in making calculations in Excel. One of its strengths is that we seem to have attracted a number of very skilled professionals who use Excel in the most innovative ways. Personally I get great pleasure in receiving spreadsheets to learn different approaches and techniques in the application of Excel. Excel is vast and there is a lot to learn and I am still learning. If you need any help in developing spreadsheet for publishing on the site you find all of us will only be too glad to help you out in any way we can.

So what does your computer say when you register XLC.dll (regsvr32 XLC.dll)? The message is important to my understanding.Another idea: Try deleting your Network User Account. this appears to have worked for two other people. It is tracked in this forum thread. I can't reproduce the problem to debug it and understand the issue but this is probably worth a try too.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 13 years ago
I have just picked up your voice mail Ron in which you say that XLC is still working but you can't see the toolbar. If you are using Excel 2003 it may be that you have hidden the toolbar. You can un-hide it from the excel main menu view>toolbars>XLC. I hope this solves your problem.

The XLC toolbar disappeared in my Add-In ribbon over the weekend. I have followed all of the procedures you have posted on the forum and while the two XLC.dll and XLC.xll files are present and the XLC.dll file has been registered, the XLC toolbar is still not showing up. I have tried unistalling and installing the XLC software twice, and still no toolbar. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get the toolbar back? A couple of weeks ago another worker at this office had the same problem and he has not been able to use ExcelCalcs. I have checked that everything is operational. Ron I am working in Excel 2010. Why not send me a copy of your calculation (or an example which features the problem) and I'll try to get it working for you?
Ron Mitchell 14 years ago
John,I tried unprotecting the cells containing the formulas, with no success. Maybe that is because I am using Excel 2007. I can live with the problem by explaining to the checker of the calculation that these cells are not updating when changing the value in the input cells. Thanks for looking into this issue.Ron
JohnDoyle[Admin] 14 years ago
This is a very interesting question Ron. I tend to keep all my workbooks unprotected but keep original versions of the calculation in the ExcelCalcs repository so I can always download a 'fresh' copy.I have played around with cell protection to investigate your problem and I found that if the equation show function, EQS(), is in a locked cell and the spreadsheet is protected then equation graphics will not automatically update (or in deed manually update). This is not a problem if the EQS() function is showing symbolic formulae because equations do not change but if you have set the graphic to show working (i.e. numbers not algebra) then the equation does need to be redrawn to show the changed number. Equations will always update in a protected worksheet provided that the cell containing the EQS() function is unlocked (format cells>protection and uncheck the locked property). I hope this is the answer you are looking for.
Ron Mitchell 14 years ago
I have an Excel calculation that I want another engineer to check and in order to keep him from altering formulas used in the calculation, I protected the workseet with only input cells unlocked. I noticed that the XLC formulas will not update until I have unprotected the workseet. I have tried to unprotect the cells where the formulas are located without success, i.e., the formulas will not automatically update when the input is changed. Is there a way for the XLC formulas to be updated in a protected worksheet without unprotecting? Thanks for any helpRon Mitchell

I have asked a software expert, Craig Littlewood, to review my installation source code and he can't see a problem with it. However there are always particular environments (version of windows, user rights...etc.) which might give rise to a problem. The problem is that we cannot reproduce the error so we cannot solve it.I think you have resolved your problem but if you still have the problem again in the future please let us know and Craig has offered to help you resolve it.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 14 years ago
The only installation problems I am currently are are of are discussed in this thread. The problem occurs when reinstalling XLC after it has been uninstalled. I have still yet to fully understand this problem but there is a work around by deleting your user profile and re-creating a new one. Looking at your details it seems that you have been an XLC Pro subscriber since 2009-02-11 so this is probably the problem. I'll make a renewed effort to get to the bottom of this. However this is the first instance of an installation problem with Windows 7 so this might introduce something new. I'll have to install Windows 7 and check it out. This may take a little time.

That's a good sign it means that XLC.xll is installed and working. The second part of XLC is called XLC.dll - this produces the XLC toolbar in Excel 2003 and should appear on the 'Add-ins' tab in Excel 2007. This you say is installed as it is has a tick mark next to XLC.dll (Right click-> customize quick access toolbar -> Addins -> Manage 'Com Addins') - just double check for me that it is XLC.dll and not XLC.xll

I have equations with degrees and radians MS formula conversion. Is there a way to remove that from the drawn equation. I've seen posts on an Equation editor. Is that XLC? MS? Do I use that and where is it?Just signed up with PRo and certain icons/options didn't show up after inputing the release code to make the demo work. Missed redraw equations, Save as native excel file, and Find a repository file. Do I need to reinstall XLC.Great add-in to Excel and better $ than Mathcad.thx,,, marty

John,I have buy-in from everyone on my end. We intend to install the educational version and hope to start using it this coming semester. From our last email, you have extended XLC timeout for the latest version to 6 months, is that correct? In other words, if I get the most recent XLC Ed version, it will last through December? Thanks,David

I have been aware of this problem for a while 3350Craig. It occurs particularly when you cut and paste from one sheet to the next. I actually cured the problem a while ago and it should not happen for the latest version XLC 07_09 which I have just uploaded to the site. Thanks for reporting these errors in. Sometimes I am not aware of them.I am sure that there is not a problem with the autodesk software.

This error has been occuring for a bit now. I can save by Ctrl S and shutdown, and then start up where I left off but it is annoying. Not sure what the trigger is as it has occurred when doing different things.NB Autodesk Vault program installation has installed Vault tools - not sure if this is significant. Thanks for any insights into thisRegards,Craig

No there is no limit to the number of equations you can have on a spreadsheet. I would be interested in seeing the spreadsheet so that I can take a look myself. I'll send an email to your registered email address so that you don't have to post it through the forum. I will respect your confidentiality should you choose to send it through.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 15 years ago
Hi David - I hope you are keeping up with your workload. It looks like we have an agreement in principle. I will extend the timeout period for XLC Ed from three to six months. The next version is due out at the end of June so I’ll set the timeout for that version at end of December. This ties in nicely with your semester. At the end of December the next version will be ready which will run until June the following year. You can install the XLC Ed version on as many machines as you like. Students can download the exactly the same software for their own machines too. I would ask that each student registers with the site to access the site material it is part of the site rules. I picked up the impression that you thought that the contribution I requested was financial. That is not the impression I meant to give – I welcome any contribution in the form of calculation uploads and we reward users with XLC Pro subscriptions. I’m sure that some of your teaching material would be of interest to our users.Best RegardsJohn

John,Thanks for the effort in your response and please excuse my tardy response. We are just finishing Final Exams week and starting the summer semester. We usually get 2 full weeks between semesters, but this year we only get one, so everything is a bit crazy.I think your offer is most generous. If you are willing, I would like to try to target the upcoming Fall and Spring semesters as a trial. The Fall semester would require installing the software at the beginning of August, when we update the computers for the Fall, and the software would need to be good until the middle of December. We then make the Spring semester install between the middle of December and the first week of January. The software must be good until the third week in May. I would need the EXACT copy that the students would see for the Fall sometime this summer, say June 15, so I can show them some examples and, hopefully, turn them loose. I will provide feedback on how students absorb the material. The XLC Time-Out would seem to be the best for the computer lab, if you would be gracious enough to work around our teaching schedule. The EXCELCALCS Site license would appear, as you say, not to create a great barrier, but please note my next question:Question 1: Would I be able to provide the exact version of the software that is loaded on our computers to the students so they can install it on their own computers? This is really only important if there is a change to the software. I could post it, or a link, on a college-only website that only students in my class have access to it. Would they need to download it on their own? I am open to suggestions and please excuse my lack of ignorance on how you would prefer to control your product. If you think the Site Access will not result in significant difficulty, then I am willing to give it a shot. Usually, the version doesn't matter once they get used to using it, but some will simply freeze if the buttons are in a different order, etc. Just remember that I have students with extremely diverse computer skills. Many have never downloaded and installed 3rd party software and this is their first EXCEL class.Question 2: Our process is to load the software on a single machine, make an image of the hard drive, and then push the updated image to the rest of the computers in the lab. Will this be allowed with the XLC Time-out? It is a pain if we had to install it one-by-one to our ~150 machines! The watermark is common with the saftware we already use, so it would not be a detriment at all.I am willing to make a contribution, but am not able to make that kind of commitment at this moment. With the bad economy, we have record enrollment and the wisdom from above is to freeze hiring! Eventhough, historically, enrollment goes up in a down turn. So, we are all working 30-50% over time! What is the old saying, if you don't study history, you are doomed to repeat it?Thanks,David

Two would give the most flexibility. That way you could keep the auto updating, but not have to use subscripts.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 15 years ago
Hi there MajorMagee - Once you change any setting using the 'About XLC and settings' button your preference is stored and the behaviour of XLC will not change unless you change the setting again. Or is the suggestion that there should be two program settings one for automatic subscripting and another for automatically redrawing equations?
MajorMagee 15 years ago
I think what he may be after is a way to switch on/off the name subscripting option so he doesn't have to remember.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 15 years ago
It is part of the 'Automatic Equation Redraw' functionality introduced with the latest update. It is easy to switch off - click on the ‘about XLC and settings’ which you find on the XLC toolbar and uncheck the 'automatic equation redraw' checkbox. Most of the time I work with XLC and I find the functionality useful but if I start work on very large spreadsheets of tabular data - it can slow you down.

Moving forward from my previous post, you realise that we offer free XLC Pro subscriptions in return for contributions? One idea that has crossed my mind is that I could give you a Corporate Coupon in exchange for posting calculations on ExcelCalcs. Perhaps we could find a way of collaborating to develop an area of the site? You could act as a local co-ordinator with your students? This idea can be extended to other educational establishments too.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 15 years ago
I work alone in a bit of a vacuum and I often don’t appreciate the organisational difficulties that larger establishments face. So first of all thank you David for taking the time and trouble to explain your difficulties using XLC Ed as a teaching tool. I am keen to have as many students as possible using the software. The right balance has to be found between giving educational users as much functionality as possible and to making it attractive to commercial users to pay for the software. This balance has to be found without introducing too much administration. That said it is pretty easy for me to change the fulcrum of the balance by tweaking the software. I have listed the current XLC Ed restrictions and I am very interested in your view as to where to strike the balance.1) XLC TIME-OUT - XLC Ed (1M) typically lasts for 3 months before it times out. The current version expires 28th June 2009 this date is hard wired into the code (only the XLC Pro release code can defuse the time-out feature). I don’t really have a problem extending this to 12 months say. I think this get around most of the difficulties you have described.2) EXCELCALCS SITE ACCESS - The site subscription controls login access to the site. XLC Ed (1M) lasts for 1 month before it expires. You are required to take out a new subscription if you return after 1 month (but you can select an additional month on XLC ED (1M) indefinitely). This expiration should not be confused with XLC time-out previously mentioned. I don’t think this is a barrier for your students.3) XLC WATERMARKS – The XLC Ed (1M) version will continue to display the “Non-commercial user” watermarks and hyperlinks to the ExcelCalcs site. I don’t think it is a barrier for educational use. I’ll look forward to your comments.

I teach Engineering Problem Solving with EXCEL.I am really interested in using XLC as a means to make it easier for students to view complex equations in EXCEl spreadsheets. This includes relatively simple equations to statics, dynamics, and thermodynamics classes. In its present form, I cannot use XLC in my classroom. The first and most desire limitation is that a month is just too short for the educational license. I teach EXCEL over an entire semester, which means the software would need to last at least 4 months to allow me to use it on my machines.I need to put in my software request at least 2 weeks before a typical semester starts to allow my IT people to install the software. Once installed and tested (which I do on a single machine), we make an image and distribute it to the other computers. The software would need to be installed on about 250 computers, which would require something like a site license. To install on each and every computer would be exceedingly time consuming at best. Also, I do not like updating and re-imaging in the middle of a semester since the computers are in use pretty much all the time. Also, I need to lock the version so that when I create teaching examples, they do not change too much. This is really important for students that mostly have never seen EXCEL, let alone 3rd Party Add-Ins.This means I would need at least a 5 month license. The license would need to be timed to expire sometime after the end of the semester, not the middle of one. Then, each student would need/want to download and install their own copy. I guess that they could update it every month or so, but, remember, these students are being exposed to EXCEL for the first time in most cases. It is better to keep a stable version until they have earned some confidence with it.I also have the dubious pleasure of being the Administrator for various Educational Software packages. The software is controlled in two ways, the first is that I am given a site license, which allows me to install full professional versions on all of my school computers. There is an agreement between me and the software provider such as a MOA, so they can hang me if I violate it. The second way is that I send the faculty/students *.edu email addresses to a central facility and the students are sent either a unique download link or unique password access. You could place a time limit for expiration for updating additional downloads from the same email address, say one year, unless their email address is updated by me.Bottom line, if you want me to use XLC in my classroom, you need to change the way it is offered. I would love to be able to offer it to my students. Once they learn it and can use it for a while, they may be willing to adopt it permanently. What you need to do to be successful with students is to give them time and opportunity to use the software at a low price or free. It may take them a few semesters to get use to it, depending on their class schedule. So, this is not a 30 day trial type of effort! My two CADD software vendors offer students 13 and 18 month student licenses for their $5000+ sofware. My numerical software providers offer free updates to the current student version for the first six months and then no upgrade support for the next 6 months or year, but the software still works. All four know that students do not adopt like commercial personnel do, they need more time and more opportunities. 30 day trial simply is not long enough. Also, I need to be able to install on a large group of machines for 5 or so months with the expiration date not corresponding to the middle of a semester!I would like to offer this up to the about 350 or so engineering students I interact each year, and convince my colleagues of its ease of use, but I need some flexibility in my ability to deliver the software. At present, it is simply TOO HARD!Maybe we can arrange a test where the software has a longer latency period? The test could be conducted in the upcoming Fall semester, if we can work out the bugs. Thanks for reading this.DavidP.S. I did not see a directly similar thread, if there was one, please excuse.

The Microsoft support site says that the issue is resolved by installing the latest service pack for Excel. If the computer has Internet access, you can download and install the latest Office 2003 service pack from either the Microsoft Update Web site or the Office Update Web. Both sites will automatically prompt you to download and install the latest service pack.

The first parameter of an EQS() function is the cell reference whose formula is going to be displayed. Let’s say you have cell B2 with the formula “=2+56” and you want to show the equation the cell underneath. Simply go to cell B3 and type “=EQS(B2)” and press the redraw button. Notice that you don’t have to use the ‘Show Equation’ button on the XLC toolbar at all.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 15 years ago
I have uploaded XLC version 01_09 build 02 the border issue is resolved in this build.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 15 years ago
Thank you helden5022 for some very pertinent questions.1) Horizontal alignment of equations - equations are aligned to the top left of the cell this is because equations generally show the formula of the cell to the left of the equation. I am not sure if I can see the benefit of aligning to the top centre of the cell. That said if you present a good reason why I’ll add some additional functionality to XLC. The vertical alignment of equations described in the help was proposed by a user too.2) Regarding the borders I think you have spotted a bug for us. I’ll look into this further and get back to you. Thanks again for the comments.

mmm there is clearly some issue here to be solve. I had been following a line of enquiry under this forum topic. Here is a summary of the investigationXLC works fine with Excel 2000 and you can save and open files fine.Book2.xls contains an equation graphic only and no XLC functions. This can be opened and closed in Excel 2000 so it is not a graphics compatibility issue.XLC functions open and save fine.XLC files are always saved native Excel file format. There is nothing special apart from the additional XLC functions.I have concluded that this is not an XLC related problem. Now I don't want to send you off on a wild goose chase but many non XLC people seem to have the same problem. jwt 15 years ago
I wonder if you have any suggestions on how to manage if statements. In the past I’ve used them a lot, but the equations will likely get too long when converted by XLC. I agree with a lot of the comments in the Forum, it would be really nice if there was a way to allow for several letters in a cell name before subscripting, like RLmax.

I have noticed this happen occasionally too but when I open the file I have found that nothing has been lost. This problem has been previously raised in the forum (read here). Whilst being annoying I think this error message can be safely ignored. I think it may have to do with a glitch in the download software but I don't think it is serious. It sounds like your case is a bit more serious if you suspect the file is missing elements of the calculation. It would be useful if you could send me a link to the file that has given you this problem and I'll take a look into it. XLC does not support nested parentheses. XLC intends to render Excel formulae in a mathematical form. In this case the upper and lower limits would be represented as arguments of a function. The Equation editor could be used to write your formula in the manner you describe.

I have taken quite a few emails too explaining how inconvenient the XLC expiration is for large companies. If I could ask you to put up with it for just one more time and I will bring out a commercial non-expiry version before the next expiry date on 27th September 2008.The main reason for expiration is to force everyone to run the latest version. XLC has changed much over the last year since its launch. Bugs have been ironed out and functionality improved. However I have not had a bug report for a long time now and the product is robust and bug free so maybe the time is right to release a non expiry version. This is my first web site and I have learned a lot about how they work. Originally the concept was a kind of Math Wikipedia with everyone contributing but if I am honest apart from some notable exceptions I am underwhelmed at the few calculations that users upload. New calculations keeps the site alive and buzzing so I want to encourage calculations in other ways.In addition users rarely use the the Amazon links and thus far I have received one cheque from for $100 from Amazon.com and none at all from the other Amazon domains. I am grateful for about 10 donations amounting to about $200. Google ads bring in about $50 per month but I have been unsuccessful in getting any paid sponsors for the site. So financially its a spectacular flop. That said I am pleased with the 26000 unique visitors per month and the popularity of the XLC and I think there is a sound base to develop. My prime motivation has not been financial but I think that funds will help to develop the site and site content. My current thoughts are for a free XLC version for educational use only and a commercial use version of XLC for users who pay an annual subscription (XLC pro). XLC will not expire but a release code on the 'about XLC' form will set it to XLC free or XLC pro. I will also offer free annual XLC pro subscriptions to users who donate good calculations. I have some work to do to implement this so please bear with me.

Hi John,I have come to rely on this software for a number of calculations, and it has a happy knack of expiring right when a calculation needs to get out the door! Working in a large company, the process for me to re-install is complicated and drawn out, times that by about 6 engineers using it in this office, you can see how the inconvenience can hurt us. Essentially it costs money every time we need the re-install.In fact I have been online looking for an alternative that we can purchase to avoid the problem, however one has not presented. So consider us your first customers for a licensed version.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Sorry to hear you are having trouble again Ernie. I have checked the download and everything is fine for me. There is a thread in the forum which shows that zip files may not download because it detects the presence of a *.exe. I don't know if this might be your problem but it is work investigating. It seems there is some help on the Winzip site. I don't think that there is any more I can do.Read the thread and Donm's remarks here.I hope it works for you.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Because I am the administrator of my own machine and I am not part of a large company I tend to not fully appreciate upgrade implications of the software. You are not the first person to raise this issue with me.I have been considering an XLC pro version of the software which would not require upgrading. I have been thinking about making this available to users on a paid subscription basis. This revenue could fuel site development. I need think this issue through properly and I will consult with users for their opinions. These are ideas only at this stage and I need to fully think through the implications. I always intend to make a free version available but possibly on an education only license.I would be interested in your opinion.CheersJohn

JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
XLC is regularly improved and we want all our users to benefit from them, so old versions die and new versions can be downloaded. It simplifies support issues and it also offers some protection from piracy. Many of you will be running XLC version 03_08 build 03 which will die on 30th May 2008. You can download build 04 which will extend XLC life until 27th Sept 2008. Apologies if this causes any inconvenience. 1)Download XLC version 03_08 build 04. 2)Close Excel. 3)Goto the Start>All Programs>XLC>Uninstall XLC and then run the new setup file in the XLC version 03_08 build 04 zip download. 4)Start Excel. 5)On the XLC toolbar select the ‘About XLC and settings’ button (it’s the last one on the bar) to check the new expiry date of 27th Sept 2008.Please note that when XLC expires only the ability of XLC to redraw equations will cease to work. Those equations already drawn remain as graphic objects and all Excel functions (including XLC functions) continue to work. There is never a danger of not being able to use your excel file or loosing time you have invested in developing a spreadsheet.

When attempting to use Xcalc functions I now get a message saying
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
123excel you need to first uninstall. Then install the new version. If for some reason that does not work simply copy and replace XLC.dll from version 03_08 zip file and replace the one in your XLC installation directory.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Brandtw it sounds like you have done everything I would suggest. It appears that XLC.xll is installed correctly (because this appears in the add ins list) but XLC.dll is not installed correctly (because you can't see the XLC toolbar and it is not listed in the View>Toolbars list). Can you check that XLC.dll is shown in your XLC install directory. If it is then make sure it is registered (i.e. part 5 below tells you XLC is registered).Tell me exactly what happens and I am sure we'll have you back up and running again.PART 1 - XLC.dll================Follow these instructions to register maually:1) goto start button and select
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have just checked the download again and it works fine. I don't think we have a problem at the site.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have just checked the download and it works fine. The file size should be 528Kb so if yours is just 70 to 80 Kb then something is going wrong somewhere but I don't think we have a problem at the site.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Thanks for your encouraging comments Tim. Its good to have you aboard. You are quite correct if XLC.dll is not registered (either manually or automatically when setup.exe is run) the toolbar will not show. Unfortunately I can't think of another way of helping you. You'll just have to install it when you have administrator rights (which is the way we would normally advise anyway).
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
It looks like you just need to use the OVD() and UND() functions to draw parts of your equation OVer the Division line and UNder the Division line. Enter
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I am sorry wes616 my intention is to keep everyone up to date with the latest features and so I don't end up trying to support older versions of the software. That said the upgrade seems to be causing some problems out there. Here is a quick fix:The zip file you download for XLC version 03_08 includes the latest copy of XLC.dll. All you need to do is copy it and paste in into the XLC install directory. Let me know if this gets you going and I'll update the upgrade instructions (it might be simpler for people to do this rather than running the install programs).
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Scott it sounds like you might be able to teach this dog some new tricks - it doesn't ring any bells with me. As you say its so easy to create a table of results and plot it I am not sure if we need another method.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Scott you could check out this Video 2 - How to Present Great Calculations in Microsoft Excel (5 min 10secs).One side of the template is arranged as a grid for presentation and the right hand side is arrange as any other worksheet. Using the XLC template I arrange all the formulae in one column and present the formulae in this area. Then I simply copy the column into a number of other columns on the right hand side to produce a table of calculations. I change an input parameter moving from column to column and plot it against a calculated value.I hope this makes sense. I have uploaded the calculation that I used to make the animation too Forced Vibration of a single degree of freedom system.xls
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Dennis the chances are that the old XLC version has not been un-installed and you somehow are starting up version 01_08 which is now expired. To un-install the old version go to the windows start button and select:All Programs>XLC>un-install XLCTo double check it has been un-installed see that XLC.dll and XLc.xll are removed from the install directory (normally C:\program files\XLC). Download XLC version 03_08 and install. If this did not work I am perplexed but all the updating process does is replace an old version of XLC.dll with a new version of XLC.dll. The zip file you download for XLC version 03_08 includes the latest copy of XLC.dll so you can always update the old copy with a simple copy paste.I hope this gets you going again Dennis. Let me know if you have any more troubles.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
It begining to smell like an administrator rights issue to me. can your systems administrator log in and install it? Anyway at least you have it working on two other machines. Thank for your help with this but I am tempted to hang my boots up on this issue.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Let's do a quick check to see if it is a problem associated with XLC.xll.Uninstall XLC and check that when Excel starts up that there are no error. OKNow Do not install XLC.dll but go straight to PART 2 of the manual installation below. I am particularly interested in what happens at point 8.PART 2 - Manually Install XLC.xll=================================7) In Excel go to Tools>Add-Ins... Clearly this is a problem. It is strange because I have XLC working in Excel 2003 on XP with no problems. The thing that worries me most is when you get the message 'C:\Program Files\XLC\XLC.xll' is not a valid add-in. This could also give the

JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Hi Clyde I think you need to uninstall XLC version 01_08 first and then install the version 03_08. I had the same problem with my laptop.
Clyde 16 years ago
Hi John,I installed the file for 03_08 but my toolbar does not have the animation icon. I'm using EXCEL 2007. The inforfmation window shows version 01.08 and expires March 31. The font seems different when I use redraw. The colors will change based on the font color for the eqs cell. I still love ExcelCalcs.Best regards,Clyde
MajorMagee 16 years ago
You've really outdone yourself this time. The animation function is brilliant.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
That's a Vista thing - only administrators can install software. XLC has no user privilege requirements.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I am very grateful for your comments (good or bad).
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Are you installing using the setup.exe in the zip file. After installation you'll see XLC in the ribbon under Add-Ins (see below). If you can't see it then the xlc.dll is not registeredif you get a name error with the xlc functions OVD(), UND() or EQS() then xlc.xll is not installed as an addin for excel.Let me know what is working and what is not and I can help you more from there.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have just done a quick check Roger and everything appears to be working fine for me. Are you given any error messages?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Glad you like the site. We have no plans to support OpenOffice but I would be interested if XLC can work with it. XLC itself is not open source code.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
It is fixed in XLC version 01_08 build 0006. Download now. Sorry again for forgetting this problem.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I am really sorry DevanJ I went on holiday and clean forgot about this problem. I have only picked up on it now. I have fixed the problem along with a few others and I'll be uploading a new XLC build soon. I'll let you know when it will be ready to download.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago

JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I guess the easiest way is to run the un-install program but maybe you can't do this if it has been deleted. fortunately there is a manual way of un-registering XLCFollow these instructions to un-register manually:1) goto start button and select 'run'2) type in 'cmd' this will get up a command prompt window.3) Un-register XLC.dll by typing 'regsvr32/u XLC.dll' into the command prompt window. - you should get a message saying you have succeeded in un-registering.Hopefully this will work.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Scott that strikes me as completely weird and I am not sure what can be going on here. Perhaps you could send me a copy of your spreadsheet so that I could take a look?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Hi Rayviez I have this complaint from time to time but I think it must be an internet connection issue because it always seems to resolve itself by trying again later. Thousands of people have successfully downloaded. If you have access to another machine maybe you could try that.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
This thread is continued here.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I might be missing your point but I have done the same thing this time using Greek characters. I am not sure if I understand your problem.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Hi netsonicyxf I think the program is working normally because the horizontal line is only drawn over an equation with something above and below the division line. When the equation has no division line it simply uses the sQRT symbol with brackets. See below.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Not that I am aware of PhilJ2. I am afraid that I don't have a mac to play around with but I will makes some enquiries to see if it is possible. You are not the first person to request this feature. It may take a little time but I'll let you know if I make any progress.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Thanks for reporting this in duco123. I don't seem to have any problems using XLC large SQRT symbols in either Excel 2003 or Excel 2007 (see image below and file attached). I suggest that you download and install the latest version of XLC and check again. If you still have problems could you attach the file so that I can take a closer look. No the file did not upload properly. I did an upload test to check that it was not a site software problem but it worked fine for me. Maybe a connection glitch?. Have a good weekend.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Thanks for your question gduncan its one I have added some notes to the site help on the name equation button so it does not cause confusion in the future. See the text under the flash tutorial.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I am not sure what has been happening here Bernard but I am glad it has been resolved. You might like to know that I have just updated XLC to include an 'Equation Cloner' button in response to user requests in the forum.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Finally nailed it and I have just updated the latest version of XLC which now includes an 'Equation Clone' button. Just download XLC and reinstall. There is a help file too to show how it works.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have played around with this a little but partly because of the existing program structure and partly because I am not clear about how it is best implemented I have not found a solution that I am happy with. The workaround I suggested works pretty well for me (copy the EQS() function and change the equation control string to

JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have emailed XLC 01_08 Beta Installation.zip to netsonicyxf and bernard. Please check your emails. It is working fine on my my two machines both Windows XP one running Excel 2003 and the other running Excel 2007. I am very grateful for your time and interest.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I am delighted to hear your comments. I am just about ready to issue a beta for testing so I'll send you a copy too. I am testing it at the moment and it appears to be holding up fine. I'll be ready to send a copy by the end of the day I think.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Thank you netsonicyxf, that would be a great help, I'll send you a copy in the next couple of days.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Just letting you know that I am make quite a bit of progress on this issue and I am currently testing a new version of XLC. It should be ready for release within a week. The correction and modifications to the equation renderer have been extensive so I am afraid it has taken some time. I may need some help testing on Excel 2008 as I do not have a copy. However I feel confidant that if it works for Excel 2007 it will be fine for Excel 2008.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have done some tests and I think I have found a bug not in XLC but Excel 2007. I need to take this up with Microsoft. I have no idea how long it will take but I'll keep you posted of any developments. Until then I am afraid that XLC is only working with Excel versions 2000 to 2003. Thanks again for reporting this it is a very significant issue for me.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I normally use Excel 2003 and everything works fine in this version. However try the same thing in Excel 2007 and I get exactly the problem you describe. Thank you for reporting this in it is certainly an Excel 2007 specific bug. I'll try to sort this out now.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I am not going to be much help here Clyde because XLC can't handle nested OVD and UND statements. The equation is rendered on two lines. I could improve on this I guess but it would take quite a bit of work and there is a work around. You are not the first to request this. Thanks for your comment. With regard to scrolling down the page to see the forum - I check that the site works with IE version 7 and Firefox/2.0.0.11 but I am aware that there are occasionally problems when content is rendered below the main menu. This looks like a blank page to the user - if this ever happens then scroll down and you'll find the content below the main menu. The joy of websites!

Hi John,I'm having trouble with formatting (see attached file). I'd like to know if EXCEL Calcs can format the formula like the Microsoft Equation 3.0 example (shown in the spreadsheet). I think that you must have some internet connection problems here. I can only try to reassure you that thousands of people have managed to download and install the software correctly. Do you have access to another machine?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Ivan I am glad you like XLC but I am afraid it only works for MS Excel.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Well I am glad you managed to get the software working at work but I am afraid that XLC will not work with versions of MS Excel prior to Excel 2000 which is why you are having problems at home. This is covered in the FAQ section of the site.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Mark - if you attach the spreadsheet I'll be glad to take a look at it. I am sure that I'll solve the problem quickly.

Hi Digita, I rely upon users letting me know if there are any problems with the site so thank you for reporting this in. I have checked it myself and managed to download the file and run the setup.exe file with no problems. However this same problem has been reported many times but always seems to be resolved by downloading again. If it does not work after downloading again can you tell me if you can open the zip file or if you cannot can you tell me the error message.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I think that you just need to redraw the page this will take care of all your numbering issues. Thanks to your question I have noticed that the flash help files have been deleted from the server and were not playing. This happened during a software upgrade last week but I have corrected it now. Hopefully you will now have all the help you need. Sorry for this oversight.
roofguy 16 years ago
I can't seem to reset the equation numbering. I have been tinkering with a spreadsheet to learn XLC. Everytime a make a mis-step, I delete the equation graphic and then the function. However, my sheet actually has only 2 equations and the numbering is up to 12. I can't seem to override the numbering. Am I doing something wrong?
roofguy 16 years ago
I downloaded it at home, unzipped it there, and burned the extracted files to a CD. Now I have the files on my computer at work.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have had a few reports of zip file problems. They have always been sorted simply by downloading the file again. I suggest you give it another try but if you are still having problems please get back to me.
roofguy 16 years ago
I downloaded the 09/07 Installation zip but cannot extract the exe. I get the message that it is either not standard zip format or is corrupt. I saw other threads about similar problems. Has this newer zip been installed successfully by anyone?P.S. I sent the file to our IT guy who tried to unzip it with Winzip, to no avail.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Nice one Clyde - I had placed more a google ads module where the banner ads are normally placed. This was fine in Firefox (my default browser) but Explorer seemed unhappy with it. I have swapped a few things around and it seems ok in both browsers now. The joy of running a website!
Clyde 16 years ago
The right side of the ExcelCalcs website is blank. I always need to scroll down to get to the information. Can this be my browser settings (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0)? This happens with almost all screens.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Download the latest versions of XLC for incorporation of this feature.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
mmm... strange one this. I don't think it is a 2007 issue though. I opened your file in 2003 and hit redraw. As you say about half the equations are not drawn but on a second redraw they all appear. I look into it when I have some time but I'll probably give it a low priority it seems to sort itself out pretty quickly. Its quite a useful spreadsheet - in fact I could have used it last week for a vehicle impact assessment I am undertaking. Have you thought about uploading it?

Hi John,I agree with Eric. It seems to work great. There does seem to be one anomaly. When I open a 2003.xls workbook in 2007 and redraw about half of the fomulas disappear. I have managed to follow you so far and I see that both the XLC.dll com object and XLC.dll are listed as correctly installed addins. My problem is that XLC.dll creates the XLC toolbar but toolbars are not allowed in excel 2007 they have been replace by something called the ribbon.I think that I need to write some more code to generate a ribbon inequivalent of the XLC toolbar and introduce a new XLC 2007 addin which may take me some time.If you have managed to show the XLC toolbar in Excel 2007 I would be very interested in how you did this. I would be also very interested in how you managed to create equations in Excel 2007 because it has stumped me.Thanks again for your help Clyde.John

Hi Clyde - I have a copy of Excel 2007 now on a new machine and I have just installed XLC. I just don't see the XLC toolbar. Toolbars are replaced in Excel 2007 with the office ribbon. can you tell me how you managed to show the XLC toolbar in 2007 it is not at all obvious to me.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Its probably a bit of an oversight on my part because I rarely name cells but I understand that lots of people do. I'll give this some further thought and possibly add it to my XLC 'to do' list. Thanks for your feedback.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Jeff the problem seems to be with the use of cell names. Your cell equation is:
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Certainly all the problems are associated with incorrect installation of two XLC files XLC.dll and XLC.xll. You try a manual installation of XLC by following the instructions here then you could let me know how you get on.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Good - I hope you find the software useful.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I am not sure if this will work for you as you may not have the rights to install manually either but you could try it and let me know how you get on.There are two files Excel needs to have installed separately 1)XLC.dll (this is the toolbar component) and 2)XLC.xll (this contains special XLC functions).PART 1 - Manually Install XLC.dll=================================Follow these instructions to register manually:1) goto start button and select 'run'2) type in 'cmd' this will get up a command prompt window.3) Navigate to the xlc install directory (use 'cd' commands)4) check using 'dir' that two files are present XLC.dll and XLC.xll5) Register XLC.dll by typing 'regsvr32 XLC.dll' into the command prompt window. - you should get a message saying you have succeeded in registering.6) Hopefully you can see the toolbar when you start Excel.PART 2 - Manually Install XLC.xll=================================7) In Excel go to Tools>Add-Ins... This displays the Add-ins form.8) From the add-ins form select the browse button and navigate to your XLC installation directory (normally this is C:\Program Files\XLC unless you installed it elsewhere). Select the xlc.xll and press 'OK'. This has manually installed xlc.xll9) Close Excel and restart it again.10) If all went well when you enter

XLC checks that XLC.dll and XLC.xll are present and installed as Excel addins. If they are not it will try to install them. It sound like something is going wrong with this process. XLC is not a vba application (not a *.xla addin) it is compiled from using Microsoft visual studio, this gives it the advantage of running faster. I don't think I can compile for Macs.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
Hi Bridger Jeff and thanks for all your comments they are very pertinent and useful to me. There is a 255 characters string limits in XLC, this is the same as Excel's equation limit however there could well be some inconsistencies because XLC does a lot of string manipulating. In your example XLC will insert spaces between operators because this makes equations easier to read but it increases the length of the equation string. It is not an issue I have given much thought to because I have never hit a string limits problem so far. I think XLC's current limit is set above reasonable expectations of what a user might hope to get out of an equation and I can see you are pushing the program to its limits with your test equations. I will give this issue some consideration when I next get to dive into the XLC code - but at the moment I am more preoccupied with packing up for my summer holiday in Tuscany B) Thanks again Jeff

Without being able to replicate the error it is impossible to debug it. I am afraid all I can do is assure you that thousands of user have managed to get XLC up and running. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have just had a play around with this, normally I log in as the windows administrator on my PC I install XLC and it appears when I start up Excel. The XLC toolbar appears as usual. I then switch user to a limited user account and start up Excel again. Excel starts but the XLC toolbar or the XLC add-in do not appear and this behaviour is what we should expect. XLC must be installed on the limited user account to work. You will need user rights to install programs or you can ask your administrator to do this for you.I hope that this helps.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
I have no idea what this may be. It seems very unusual and has never been reported in before. Can you run other setup.exe files?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 16 years ago
We have not had many installation issues reported in recently so thanks for letting me know your bug. Your problems sound strange so let's do a few checks to see what's happening.
1) Start Excel. Go to Tools>Add-Ins... This displays the Add-ins form and check that xlc is shown as installed. If OK then proceed.
2)Is the XLC toolbar visible? Check Excel MainMenu>View>Toolbars> and XLC Tools should show with a check mark next to it. If OK then proceed.
2) Check that XLC function are working. Type "=OVD(3)/und(6)" into a cell. If the cell returns 0.5 then XLC functions are working OK. If OK the proceed - if not install XLC.xll manually by following these instructions. From the add-ins form select the browse button and navigate to your XLC installation directory (normally this is C:Program Files>XLC unless you installed it elsewhere). Select the xlc.xll and press 'OK'. This has manually installed xlc.xll
Let me know how you get on.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Hi GregI have tested the program and the latest version is working correctly. Maybe some further explanation of how the program works is in order - it is covered in the online help under controlling the appearance of equations. Check the EQS function in the cell underneath your equation object - if it contains 'multiplication= 1' parameter in the equation control string then multiplication signs will be shown. When you select 'show multiplication sign' from the 'about XLC and settings' form - this sets program defaults and subsequent EQS() functions will contain the parameter 'multiplication= 1' but it will not change existing ones. If you want to change existing ones use Excel's Replace functions (i.e. Replace 'multiplication= 0' to 'multiplication= 1'). I hope this helps.

The EQS() function (EQuation Show) takes a cell reference whose formula will be rendered as an equation. So there is no reason why equations cannot be displayed below the cell containing the formula - just drag it there and hit the redraw button (equations are always rendered over the cell containing an EQS() function. The problem is with naming cells because XLC assumes that all cell names are to the left hand side of the cell that is named.Potential solutions:1) Get XLC to check if name is defined above the cell if it is not named on the left.2) Introduce a EQNAME() function which takes a cell reference as a parameter.I don't clearly see how useful this functionality would be so if iamdman could give me an insight as to what he is trying to achieve I can weigh up if it is worth developing.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago

Hi YogiI am glad you are out there helping me correct my mistakes.1) Yes the 'about XLC and settings' form shows the wrong version number - doh!2)I think 'top' and 'mid' is working as I intended but perhaps I have not explained how it works too well. When you open your 'about XLC and settings' button on the XLC toolbar you can set your EQS() equation control string preferences. So setting vertical alignment to 'top' means that subsequent EQS() functions created have an EqnStyle= 0 (i.e. top vertical alignment). This will not change the display of any existing equations. The online help covers this topic if you need further clarification and it includes the graphic you need.Remember you can always use Excel's find/replace functions to change all occurrences of

I tend not to name cells so I had not thought through this issue. I'll put it down on my 'todo' list and try to improve XLC in this regard.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
There are probably quite a few areas where we don't conform to standard mathematical notation e.g. tan^-1 will be written as ATAN(). Whilst it is feasible to rewrite certain functions I don't think I want to start because I think it could become fraught with problems and complexities. XLC equations might not always conform to mathematical standards they are at least unambiguous. I'll leave it that way for now.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
This is actually something I am working on at the moment. XLC has a problem if the index's name was subscripted (because a subscripted name raised as an index would be unreadable). The current work around is only to superscript numbers, as you have seen. But this is currently on my list of things to improve so subscribe to this topic and watch this space...Post edited by: JohnDoyle, at: 2007/03/30 14:24

I am a structural engineer and this is a great tool to write some notes on formula. It would be better though if when naming formula you could mark items that needed superscript and not just subscript every character after the first. Also, I wish that you could show a fraction in a fraction.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Thanks for your comment you have cleary read our reasons for having an expiry date on our FAQ's page. Remember when XLC expires only the ability of XLC to redraw equations will cease to work. Those equations already drawn remain as graphic objects and all Excel functions (including XLC functions) continue to work so formulae in cells continue to work. Please be assured that you have nothing to loose in terms of time invested in developing your spreadsheet.
DvdHntr 17 years ago
Thanks,Pity about the fractions. I will just not format the names of the equations with XLC.

XLC will only draw one division line in an equation. So you can't have a fraction within a fraction. You probably need to break down the calculation into a number of parts. On your second point you can restrain XLC from automatically subscripting this is cover in the online help just below the flash tutorial. /content/view/52/126/Hope this keeps you going.
DvdHntr 17 years ago
Can I just add one more part to this?Is there a way to change the way a equation name formatted so that|fM does not subscript the M.Perhaps there is another mark to placed in to indicate that a character should be exempt from formatting (in the same way the | is used to display greek letters).

I am trying to display a formula that has:Fsy*Ast[do-((Ast*Fsy)/(1.7*f'c*B))]Then this equation is divided by 1000000.The problem is that I want the 1000000 underneath and I can only get it to the side. I tried two pairs of OVD()/UND() but the middle pair is then displayed in the equation.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Thanks for the question. In answer to the first part there are no plans to interpret the POWER() function. Generally speaking the way you input your formula will have an effect on how the equation is drawn. I am mainly worried about introducing anomalies with particular functions. For now I would keep using the '^' operator it produces a better mathematical representation. The line above the radicand (and you have taught me a new word today) only appears if the SQRT() function is nested around OVD() and UND() functions.e.g.SQRT(OVD(J10)/UND(J9))
Clyde 17 years ago
See below:=(J9/4)*((J10/J9)-J11)^2 Eqn. 1=(J9/4)*POWER((J10/J9)-J11,2) Eqn. 2Both formulas do the same thing. ExcelCalcs provides two different presentations. The preferred ExcelCalcs display would be from Eqn. 1. Will ExelCalcs be able to understand Eqn. 2 in the future? Also, the square root displays the radical without the line above the radicand. In the example on the website, the line is there. And just for curiosity, will it display the index for values other than two?

Carlton wroteI do not have Windows Vista installed on any of my machines or Office 2007. Has anyone out there managed to get it to run or do I need to investigate this further?
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Clyde askedThe short answer is yes.The longer answer is yes. All the XLC generated equations are enhanced windows metafiles (a native windows graphic) and will be stored within an excel document just like any other graphical object. If you want to send a document to a user without XLC installed the XLC functions OVD(), UND(), ODI(), UDI() & EQS() will generate a #NAME error. You can get round this by:1) Send them to ExcelCalcs to pick up a free copy of XLC!2) If you know that they do not have privileges to install software (maybe its a work machine) you can remove the functions using Excels 'Find and Replace'. The equation graphics will loose their parent EQS() definitions and the poor orphans will never be able to redrawn in response to a cell formula change - they will still hang around but they are just dumb graphics now.Post edited by: JohnDoyle, at: 2007/03/17 11:13

Thanks for reporting this bug it helps us make the software more robust. When Excel starts up it triggers the XLC initialisation process. XLC checks to see if a file called XLC.xll is installed if it is not then it tries to install it. It sounds like your machine is not allowing xlc.xll to be installed and generating an error.I have done a little research into this and it seems that it is machine dependant and may be due to your security settings. Lets not get bogged down in security settings just yet and we can try to install the xlc.xll addin manually. If we achieve this then when XLC initialises it checks that the addin is installed and will not try to re-install this. Hope you are managing to follow this? Cutting to the crunch, follow these instructions:1) Start Excel (ignore the 'Add Method of AddIns class has failed') if you get it.2) Go to Tools>Add-Ins... This displays the Add-ins form and I am guessing that you will not see xlc installed.3) From the add-ins form select the browse button and navigate to your XLC installation directory (normally this is C:\Program Files\XLC unless you installed it elsewhere). Select the xlc.xll and press 'OK'. This has manually installed xlc.xll4) Close Excel and restart it again. Hopefully you will not get an error message again.Let me know how you get on.

JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
I bow to you better knowledge yogia. I have had to just check a few things. In Office 2000, Microsoft created a new add-in architecture, called a COM Add-in, which was common to all the Office applications and the VBIDE. XLC is a COM Add-in thus it requires Excel 2000.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
I am sorry yogia the addin only works with Excel 2000 or later see FAQ's /content/view/30/89/The reason for this is that this is when microsoft introduced VBA into Excel (visual basic for applications) and XLC uses this functionality.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Thats exactly what I did. Hopefully it's Europroof now.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago

JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Download XLC again - I have modified the program so that:UND() is used as the logical AND() function in German versions of MS Excel. To prevent conflicts: UDI() can be optionally used in place of UND(). and for the sake of consistency ODI() can be optionally used in place of OVD(). I have also updated the help filesEverything appears to be working fine, please let me know if you have any problems.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Can you give me a few days to work on this? I'll have a look at it over the weekend.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
This is a very interesting. Do you get any errors when the excel starts up due to duplication of functions? If you are inserting a cell formula and select insert>function is the UND() function listed once or twice? Is the OVD() function listed?I am thinking about a work around by providing another function will behave as the UND function but call it UDI().

I think I will be ditching MathCAD and using this instead. Then I can send my calculations to anyone then, we all have Excel whereas only a few of us have MathCAD.
JohnDoyle[Admin] 17 years ago
Mmmm I don't think so. What I tend to do is use the XLC template /component/option,com_remository/Itemid,36/func,fileinfo/id,20/ and arrange calculation cells in a vertical line. I show all equations on this page. Then I copy the equation line to the right of the page across a number of columns to make a table. Take a look at a beam bending calculations /component/option,com_remository/Itemid,36/func,fileinfo/id,17/Here I have calculated the deflection at one point and shown the calculations for this then I copy the vertical line of cell formulae to the right of the page to make a table of results for 10 points along the beam. The ten points are plotted to show the deflected shape at the end of the calculation. In this way I have managed to display the calculation method and generate a table from this.
