Description:

"WEIGHTS" is a spreadsheet program written in MS-Excel for the purpose of calculating the weights of pipes and tanks or vessels.  Specifically, the weight of pipes either empty or full of contents, with/without insulation, and with/without ice buildup is determined.  The volume and weight of tanks or vessels of various top/bottom or end configuations is determined.

This program is a workbook consisting of seven (7) worksheets, described as follows:
  • Doc - Documentation sheet
  • STD Pipe Wt's - Calculate weights of standard weight steel pipes
  • XS Pipe Wt's - Calculate weights of extra-strong weight steel pipes
  • XXS Pipe Wt's - Calculate weights of double-extra strong weight steel pipes
  • Pipe Rack Level Wt. - Calculate total weight of steel pipes on a pipe rack level
  • Vert. Tank Vol. & Wt. - Calculate volume and weight of a vertical cylindrical tank
  • Horiz. Tank Vol. & Wt. - Calculate volume and weight of a horizontal cylindrical tank
All the worksheets are independent and self contained, so that you can move them from one workbook to another. All the worksheets are protected, but not with a password.

Program Assumptions and Limitations:

1.  "STD Pipe Wt's" worksheet assumes use of standard weight (STD) steel pipe for diameters from 1/2" up through 48".

2.  "XS Pipe Wt's" worksheet assumes use of extra strong (XS) steel pipe for diameters from 1/2" up through 48".

3.  "XXS Pipe Wt's" worksheet assumes use of double-extra strong (XXS) steel pipe for diameters from 1/2" up through 12".

4.  "Pipe Rack Level Wt." worksheet permits use of STD, XS, and XXS steel pipes.

5. References used for pipe OD and ID properties are as follows:
     a. AISC Manual of Steel Construction, 13th Edition CD Database for STD pipes from 1/2" through 12" dia.
     b. ITT Grinnell Pipe Hanger and Engineering Manual for STD pipes from 14" through 36" dia.
     c. AISC Manual of Steel Construction, 13th Edition CD Database for XS pipes from 1/2" through 12" dia.
     d. Crane Technical Paper No. 410, "Flow of Fluids through Valves, Fittings, and Pipe" (1991) for XS pipes
        from 14" through 36" dia.
     e. AISC Manual of Steel Construction, 13th Edition CD Database for XXS pipes from 2" through 8" dia.
     f. Crane Technical Paper No. 410, "Flow of Fluids through Valves, Fittings, and Pipe" (1991) for XXS pipes
from 1/2" through 1-1/2" dia. and 10" through 12" dia.
     g. Website www.allsteelpipe.com for STD and XXS pipes of 42" and 48" dia.

6.  Worksheet for Vert. Tank Volume & Weight assumes vertical cylindrical tank, and permits use of various top and bottom configuations.  Tops may be either flat, spherical, or elliptical.  Bottoms may be either flat, elliptical, spherical, or conical.

7.  Worksheet for Horiz. Tank Volume & Weight assumes vertical horizontal tank, and permits use of various end configuations.  Left and right ends may be either flat, elliptical, or spherical.

8.  Worksheet for Vert. Tank Volume & Weight assumes wall thickness of center, cylindrical section is same as for top and bottom.  Where top and/or bottom thickness are not the same as center, cylindrical section, the user may account for the difference by including an estimated correction weight (+/-) in the Misc. Weight input.

9.  Worksheet for Horiz. Tank Volume & Weight assumes wall thickness of center, cylindrical section is same as for both ends.  Where end thicknesses are not the same as center, cylindrical section, the user may account for the difference by including an estimated correction weight (+/-) in the Misc. Weight input.

10. This program contains several “comment boxes” which contain a wide variety of information including explanations of input or output items, equations used, data tables, etc.  (Note:  presence of a “comment box” is denoted by a “red triangle” in the upper right-hand corner of a cell.  Merely move the mouse pointer to the desired cell to view the contents of that particular "comment box".)

Thank you Alex.
The vessel weight pages are great.

Recently I was asked to add information for stainless steel pipes. Three (3) worksheets have been added for Schedule 5s, 10s, and 40s stainless steel pipes. This new stainless steel pipe information was also added to the "Pipe Rack Level Wt." worksheet as well.

I added the information and the capability to determine the associated weights for 42" and 48" diameter Standard and Extra-Strong pipes. In the "Pipe Rack Level Wt." worksheet off of the main calculation page on the right, I added information to facilitate the input of additional concentrated (point) loads for larger pipes above and beyond what was used for an assumed uniformly distributed loading. This was done per Fluor guideline 000.215.1250, "Pipe Supports".

In the "WEIGHTS.xls" workbook, I was recently asked to expand the capabilities to include extra strong (XS) and double-extra strong (XXS) pipes. In the earlier version, only Standard weight pipes were addressed. Thus, I added 2 new worksheets, "XS Pipe Wt's" and XXS Pipe Wt's", and updated the "Pipe Rack Level Wt." worksheet as well.
