Butt Weld Geometry & Stress Verification
Description
This calculation provides a comprehensive design and verification tool for T-butt joints with partial penetration butt welds reinforced by fillet welds, in accordance with Eurocode 3 (EN 1993-1-8).
Key Features
- Live-Updating XY Sketch: A custom Scatter Chart provides an accurate, scale-correct visualization of the joint profile.
- Position-Based Audit: Every vertex in the drafting logic is assigned a unique position number, mapped directly to a fully auditable "Sketch Coordinates" sheet with XLC rendered equations.
- Dual-Mode Verification: Performs both geometric limit checks (throat/gap) and mechanical stress checks (directional method).
- Universal Unit System: Leverage 28 unit categories to work in any system (SI, Metric, or US Customary) with a single dropdown selection. All results and equations update automatically.
How to Use
- Set the Plate Geometry (Lug thickness and gap).
- Input the Weld Geometry for both sides.
- Observe the Weld Sketch for immediate visual confirmation of the fit-up.
- Verify the Stress Components against the material resistance values.
- Use the Sketch Coordinates tab for a deep-dive audit of the drafting logic.
Summary
This is a state-of-the-art XLC workbook that sets a new standard for visual auditability in the repository. The combination of dynamic sketching, position-based vertex indexing, and universal unit compatibility makes it both a powerful design tool and an excellent educational resource.
Workbook Structure
Sheet 1: Butt Weld Geometry
- Header: Purpose, Reference, Validation, Units (Master Dropdown).
- Sketch: Large XY Scatter chart plot.
- Inputs: Plate and weld dimensions.
- Checks: "VERIFIED/REJECT" status cells with logical conditions.
Sheet 2: Weld Stress Check
- Dedicated verification for the stress components.
- Links to Sheet 1 unit system for consistency.
Sheet 3: Sketch Coordinates
- Audit Table: Twin drafting blocks (X and Y) with XLC
EQSformulas. - Pos Mapping: Unique integers (1-16) mapped to chart markers.
Units Sheet
- Universal Lookups: Comprehensive table for 6 unit systems across 28 categories.
- Dynamic Linking: Calculations use variable units (e.g.
=Length) rather than static strings, ensuring the workbook is region-independent and future-proof.
